New Deftones Album is Finished, Slated for 2020 Release

The Deftones are notorious for delays in releasing new music, having infamously suffered through numerous setbacks and infighting throughout their career. Last year they promised a new album in 2019 and, well, I don’t have to tell you that it’s 2020 now and there’s no new music yet, although by all accounts everyone in the band is getting along just fine this time around.

But! In a new interview with Mixdown, drummer Abe Cunningham has revealed that not only is the new album recorded with mixing currently underway, but that he expects the record to come out in late 2020 if everything goes according to plan (big if).

Cunningham explained of the writing and recording process this time around:

“It’s cool, man. We did things a little bit differently this time. We stretched everything out over the course of a couple of years, rather than blasting through in one go. The process has been mixed with about a year-long break, that we all agreed upon. Being rested and taking that time off really made us appreciate what we’re doing even more. When we’re all laughing and smiling and coming up with stuff together, just like when we were 17… it’s a beautiful thing.”

What’s more, Lambgoat notes that a photo posted to the band’s Instagram account (below) shows Terry Date, who produced the band’s first four albums, behind the boards. Naturally, fans are taking that as a sign that Date is back to produce the new effort.

You’ll know more as soon as we do.
