Current Kreator/former Dragonforce bassist Frédéric Leclercq, who also played in Sinsaenum with the late Joey Jordison, has revealed that he knows how Jordison died… but that it’s “not my place to discuss” the cause of death publicly.
Asked about the cause of death by Impact, Leclercq said:
“That’s not my place to discuss. Of course I know. I’m just saying it’s not my position. The family asked for privacy at that time, and I respect that. It’s just very sad.”
Leclercq went on to discuss Jordison’s legacy:
“To me, he was more than a musician. To me, he was first and foremost a friend. So I lost a friend that was only 46-years-old, and it hurts. He was an amazing musician, not only on drums but also he wrote amazing songs. And we were lucky enough to play together. It was great.
“I created Sinsaenum. He contacted me. We were looking for a drummer. Everything just fell into place. He came up with the name [a combination of the words ‘sin’ and ‘insane’). The last shows he played were with us; that’s the last thing that he played.
“I have a column in a Japanese magazine called Young Guitar, and I was doing yesterday, typing, and I just remembered the last song that he played ever was [Sinsaenum’s] ‘My Swan Song,’ and I guess the title is… And that’s a song that he really loved. I remember he was just, like, ‘Yeah.’ He felt something about it. So it’s a little strange to think about it now. So I’ve been listening to the song again and again.
“I’m still processing the fact that he’s gone.”
Jordison, who co-founded Slipknot in 1995 and played drums in the band through 2013, died on July 26. He was only 46 years old. No cause of death has been publicly revealed.
In August, the surviving members of Sinsaenum released a statement in which they said that “Joey also had his demons, and nothing hurts more than knowing that we did everything in our power to help and couldn’t get through to him.”
Jordison said in 2016 that he was suffering from a rare neurological disorder that made it difficult for him to play drums, claiming the band fired him as a result of it. He stated in 2017 that “I would never have quit Slipknot, ever.” In a 2014 interview, frontman Corey Taylor declined to elaborate on why Jordison was let go from the band, but said “it was one of the hardest decisions we ever made.”
Sinsaenum vocalist Sean “Sean Z.” Zatorsky (ex-Chimaira, Dååth, etc.) recently appeared on a cover of Slipknot’s “Surfacing” recorded by France’s Dropdead Chaos as a tribute to Jordison. You can listen to that here.
